Tips to Be Successful as an Artist
Define Your Idea of Success
Success means different things to different people. This is
even truer in the domain of art. So,
before you embark on your artistic career, you need to clarify to yourself what
success actually means.
Is it how popular your work becomes? Is it how much money
you pull in? Or is it something harder to explain and cannot be put in numbers
and figures?
Whenever possible you should clearly define your goals and
objectives. This will keep you focused and able to deliver the kind of art that
will satisfy both you and your admirers.
Be Productive
When it all is said and done, when all the proponents and
critics are finished, it will be your work that will be speaking for who you
are. So, you need to produce art at regular intervals.
How you define the intervals is completely up to you.
Everyone has a distinct creative process that has its own timeframe and
gestation period. However, it is important to be consistent.
If you are a true artist
i.e. you live for the art you make, then being creative and consistently so
should not be a problem. This will also keep you focused on your vocation and
keep all other noise in the background.
Know the Business Aspect
You might be an artist who lives for their colors or clay. However, you also need to purchase those
materials that will allow you to create your masterpieces. This is the business
side of art.
If you want to be a successful artist, then you need to have
at least a reasonable understanding of the market. Whether you are commercial
or indie, you will need money to move up in life.
So, it is best to not just know the market but also have
contacts that can promote your work and pitch it to the right art crowd. No
doubt, this will help you immensely in the long-run.
